If I let a mortgage go into forclosure will the tax debt relief act signed in 2007 help me? This was my principle residents for three years. The original loan was for 84,000. I refinanced and it came up to 94,000. I refinanced again and it came up to 102,000. I know probably it might cover only the original loan of 84,000. Will the relief act not the bailout help me? How much phantom tax would I have to pay on the remaining 18,000? Thanks for your answers!
Will my tax debt affect me cashing in a Series EE bond? I have a 200 dollar (face value) Series EE bond that was bought back in 1996. I currently owe both federal and state taxes from past years. When I go to cash in this bond, will they take money from it upon cashing it, or is it up to me to claim it when I file? Thanks for your help!
How to clear up tax debt? So my boyfriend owes about $20,000 in back taxes. I would like to know if there is anyway to get it reduced? We have talked to the IRS they can set up a payment plan but then it would take forever to pay it off. If we went to a lawyer would it really be worth it? I have heard of people getting burned by doing that. If you have any information that would help please let me know. Thanks!
Need Past Tax debt help URGANT? My step-dad has past taxes due. My mom wants to file a separate return. Will she be held responsible even if she does not file. She is going to file.....but she thinks that if she files separate (Not jointly). she will not be responsible for 2008 taxes that my step-dad owes.
Tax Debt - less than $10,000? Are there any companies that will help you settle tax debt if you owe less than $10,000? This should be for United States Not United Kingdom
Back State and Federal Tax debt owed? Good Morning, a debt collector has contacted my wife and it leaves me a bit concerned. Currently, my wife owes both state and federal back taxes. I believe when she was 18 or so she didnt file for a year or something. Im not really sure the specifics. The amounts arent TOO bad. Lets say: Estimated State: 2100 Estimated Federal: 1500 and i do believe those are high estimates. her and I had to file a joint bankcrupty earlier this year. (dont judge me, i can admit we made extremley poor financial decisions when we first started out. and the cost of living doesnt help.) This bought us time with Federal Taxes. They havent contacted her, but she has been in contact with them. No monies have been paid at this time to either debt. However, a collection agency for the state has contacted her threatening to place this on her credit report, garnish wages etc. Now, we would be MORE THAN WILLING to pay them.. however, she is currently out of work on bedrest per a complicated pregnancy and will not be returning to work until late November at the earliest. They cant touch my wages, because these were debts incruued before the marrige.. the only thing they can touch with my name are the bank accounts. My questions are: 1) They have to send you something in writing before a bank levy is processed correct? This has to go through the court system and she has to be given the chance to appeal correct? 2) With our tax return for 2010- it will completely pay off both debts, in full. Do you think it can wait that long? 3) Do we have any options considering she is out of work due to a temporary disability and not because she simply wont work? I understand she was wrong, but she has made every attempt to stay in contact with these people. Its just that the money isnt there when we are just making it on my salary alone.
Tax debt relief HELP!!!? My roommate is in debt $12,000 with the IRS and it just keeps stacking up, we barely make it by as is and have no money to pay a tax debt relief company to help, does anyone know of any that are free or dont require any money up front??? No my roommate didnt just say, "I'm not gonna pay my taxes" she doesnt have money to pay it, when you have about $100 left after bills it's kind of hard to pay $12,000 off. our government sucks because if you are middle class you get taxed like a rich person and paid a small step above lower class. When she received her stimulus, it wasn't a stimulus it was a statement saying she owed $10,000
Is there a place that offers tax help? I have been paying on back taxes for several years and want to know how I can settle my tax debt. I don't have a lot of money to pay on my back taxes. My wages have been garnished, I pay that way. I contacted one of the places you see on TV, but they wanted this huge up front fee. What can I do? I make good money, but I never see the fruits of my labor.
Tax debt relief company took my money do they have the right? So I am working on getting my money back, to do so I have to prove that this company could not have worked on a case with the IRS like they have claimed to have done. The company has taken $1800.00 from me. I contacted www.taxcarepros.com on the web seeking assistance with dealing with the IRS about my past tax debt. Long story short, I handled my problem with the IRS on my own by arranging a payment plan. TaxCare Professionals at no point in time got my SS#, my W2's, a signed Power of Attorney, or a signature on thier "Payment Agreement" form. I tried contacting TaxCare until I was blue in the face about canceling whatever they had started (because they had already taken money from my account). It wasn't until a month later when they took another $900 from me that they finally spoke with me and told me it was just tough luck. I have proof of me dealing with the IRS on my own (a letter from the IRS). Could they have worked on a case without my pertinant info? please help my kids a xmas
My mom is in tax debt and can not pay at all.? My mom owes about $14,000 from taxes from when she worked at home years ago. She makes very little money now and rents an apartment, does not own a home, and has a car that's worth only $1000 (if that has anything to do with it). I'm not sure how all this works, but I'm trying to help her get her stuff together. She already struggles financially and can not afford to do a payment plan even if it is only $100 a month, and obviously can not afford a lawyer. Would bankruptcy help at all to get out of tax debt, or what are some other options regarding tax debt and poverty? I
Can anyone help with a tax debt question? After working as a subcontractor for several years, I accumulated quite a large tax debt that I have since been trying to ignore. Obviously, these things only get worse with time, I understand that. My question is, does anyone have any familiarity with the tax relief companies you see advertised on TV? My guess is that I owe in the neighborhood of 30,000 dollars and earn around 25,000 a year. So if you have used these places, can you give me an idea of how they work and what I can expect them to be able to do for me? Do they need money up front? If so, how much? What else might they ask from me? Thanks in advance for your help.
Is there free legal help to resolve tax debt? Am in debt to the IRS for around $6000 or so. They are on the verge of filing a levy against me, but not if I can pay at least $95 a month towards my debt. Know I will never be able to pay it all off because of interest and all. And I don't wish to spend the rest of my life with them keeping my tax refund every year. Just can't continue to live like this. They have no heart. Know there's an Offer In Compromise, but who can I get to help me with that? I can't afford to pay an attorney. Is there an agency that offers "free help"? Or a loan company that will make a loan regardless of my credit, because it's really bad.
The IRS allows you to invest an amount of money pre-tax, can you also pay off debt pre-tax? I was just wondering, alot of people just coming out of college have huge amount of debt and arent ready to start contributing to a IRA or a retirement plan but we have huge amounts of debt, is there a way we can divert money into a plan to help us pay off our debt faster that is tax free? similar to the way you can divert money into a tax free investment/retirement?
Help 2001 tax debt.? Received a letter from IRS, say I owe $4,000 in tax, interest and crap from 2001. I don't even recall filing a 2001 tax return. And I did not work that year. Can they do this? I do not even know what questions to ask them if I called.
I have tax debt of$14K. from 2001 I messed my life up that year: but I fixed that not IRS. Any advice? I destroyed my own life in 2001, I have worked hard to get my life back, I am trying so hard but The IRS will not help and I know they are not in the business of forgiving. But do you think they would work with me to at least get rid of the interest and penalties. I am currently working on filing a amended return, I have a church member helping me with that. Does anyone have any tips on ways of dealing with the IRS. Or clues as to what I might be able to negotiate with them.. I do not have any extra money. Just like most people, I can hardly keep my head above water.A second job is not an option, I had cervicle surgery on 10/07 and am due to have lumbar surgery when my neck heals.. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Do those commercials for attorneys helping people eliminate tax debt bug you like they do me? They're on all the time, and I just watched one with a woman who supposedly saved over $1.7 million in back taxes. Now, I don't know about most Americans, but I don't watch those things and go, "Whooowee! That is awesome!" I really hope and pray that the majority of what those people are eliminating is truly penalties and interest, because otherwise it sucks, and I think those people (who seem to be mostly business owners) should be paying their taxes just like everyone else. And here's another thing I wanna know: From what type of funds are those attorneys being paid?? No doubt, they are making a nice little profit, like disability lawyers.
obama now has us looking at over 1 trillion in new debt? just in stimulus money. how much more do they expect my son to pay? last i heard, my 9 year old will have over 30k in tax debt to pay the gov. WTF? i am poor and i have no debt of my own so is the gov helping me out or what? no. my stimlus checks go to the food banks here in my town.tax and spend. crazy i reckon.
How can we handle taxes , and debt ? My wife became ill about 2 years ago an could not work. We used credit cards and loans to pay bills ect. Now we owe this money and are paying them off. But now since we both work and are both making more money i have a feeling we will owe money when income tax time comes. Are there any programs that could help us, we are trying to get rid of debt but at the same time we will owe the irs. How do you handle this?
can I claim on 2005 taxes money paid towards 2001, 2003, 2004 tax debts? I saw on taxAct that I could, never knew this. Can I really claim what I paid towards other years during the 2005 year? State (CA) around ~ 1500, Federal around ~$4000! It's fairly signifigant amounts and changes the return drastically. Doesnt sound right to me...I owed them anyway, why should I benefit. But that's how it came up on my tax program. Help! Hundreds of dollars are at stake! I had no idea.
Reganomics, Personal Debt, Tax cuts for the Rich, and The failing infrastructure of America? http://www.deccanchronicle.com/dc-comment/reagan-triggered-savings-and-loan-crisis-453 "There’s plenty of blame to go around these days. But the prime villains behind the mess we’re in were Reagan and his circle of advisers — men who forgot the lessons of America’s last great financial crisis, and condemned the rest of us to repeat it" Paul Krugman (Nobel Prize winning economist) In the continuing recession, we see that neither party (rep/dem) seems very interested in helping out Americans in trouble. The TARP funds were approved based on the buying up of Toxic assets, but that never happened. Instead Wall Street got Bailed out, at least the groups that had people working for both Bush and Obama.. and the Banks went Willy nilly with bonuses and the like ... also congealing and consolidating, buying each other up like so many cannibals at a pig roast. In the meanwhile, the foreclosure storm has raged on http://www.housingwatch.com/2010/03/19/foreclosures-still-rising-told-ya-so/ and yet not a day goes by in here where someone doesn't wave the name Ronald Regan around as if it were some magical name from the holy scriptures of Babylon. I'd like to know what it is that supposed "conservatives" find so appealing about a man who introduced us to personal debt levels that are the highest they have ever been in our young country ? And the same people will call me and anyone else that suggests a work program or anything else that might address a crumbling infrastructure.. a socialist? When in fact Ronny did more to create a dependent population than any one president in our history ? Anyone in here ever consider what this man's legacy really is ? edit: Nick, Regan can't be credited with any of that. Read , learn, move on.. edit: Stereo... I love that this story quoted a heritage foundation person..lol. Paul Krugman is a Liberal, but the Heritage foundation has no Bias ? What the nasty little hater forgot to mention is that a family of 4 making less than 50k annual is below the poverty line when adjusted for health and education costs.. also , they don't qualify for Medicaid at that level of income so "yes" their health costs fall directly on them. Average cost for Health Insurance for a family of four with no preexistent conditions is roughly 950-1300.00 monthly. Now do the math
Tax lawyers? I'm sure you've all seen these ad's with these lawyers saying they can save you thousands in Tax debt.... Well has anyone actually used them and saved money? What were your circumstances? I owe about $30,000.00 due to my divorce but i dont trust laywers and the ones i've talked to want thousands but dont guarantee anything. So i pay them their 3 or 4 thousand and they say im sorry i can't help, im just screwed so i want to know if they helped anyone here? Thanks
What recourse does a citizen have to appeal an illegal action by the government? I was forced into retirement by the IRS in retaliation for having made complaints to my elected representatives of certain abusive and illegal practices being used to attempt to force me to pay a tax debt owed by my wifes former spouse. My health has been destroyed, and I am now terminally ill with a degenerative heart condition, resulting from 6 years of this callous, unrelenting harassment. I was told that unless I paid, I could lose my job, or I could have my wages garnished. Despite filing chapter 7 in which my spouses student loans were also listed and discharged, the government has now seized my tax refund as well as my SSDI payment. As a result, I face eviction from my home due to inability to pay rent, as well as inability to buy medication that I need to live, among a list of other consequences too long to list. If there is a law firm out there who could help, or if anyone has any ideas at all, I am truly desparate.
tax pro's who settle your debts? I paid a tax debt firm $5000 to settle my tax debt, its going on a year and nothing was done and i have had about $6800 in levies and am now having wages attached. they were to try a hard-ship relief of debt, offer in compramise, and then another resolution. But nothing has been done, in fact they failed to file and save these levies as promissed. what can i do, can i recover the $5000 2 years prior to this last year i paid the tax professionals $2000 to help me, and they did nothing, i believe they filed BK - are out of business, can I claim the loss, recover it, and lastly can anything be done?
Income Tax Question.? Im a full time college student, 18 years of age, earning minimum wage at a part time job earning less than 8k a year. My paycheck removes social security and medicare taxes, but no federal income tax ( i live in alabama). Do i have a tax debt, and if so how do i find out how much. I do not fully understand all of this complicated tax stuff, and i do not have many forms about my income. just simple paycheck stubbs. HELP!!
debt - does he have to pay this back? help!? myself and my boyfriend were bribed )with the promise of paying off our council tax debt) into getting a mortgage on a house we were renting from his parents. i didn't think this was all completely kosher whatsoever and backed out, however the house was sold to another buyer and they received the monies - typically £90,000. they are still hassling my boyfriend who is now stuck in a bedsit, paying them all of his spare cash a month (about £2,000 is owed in solicitors fees and in the council tax which they had already paid for us). i know he has no legal obligation to pay them this money back as the only arrears are between my boyfriend and his parents, however, we need to move in together soon and this is the only thing standing in our way, should i speak to the CAB? i would like personal opinions please.
I own home at 5.75% & have 2nd & lots ofcredit card debt. 2 dings on 2nd. shd i file B or take final 40g of eq i recently purchased home with 2 loans. The first is at 5.75%.The second is at 6.75%. I have alot of credit card debt. I am strapped financially. I have 40,000 left of usable equity in my 2nd (leaving 10% in). I recently have 2 deragatories on my credit rating for my 2nd. Should I take out the remaining $40,000 in my 2nd and consolidate some of my debt, pay outstanding taxes due and try and hammer away at the rest of the debt slowly. Or should i protect my equity in case of emergency job loss, declare bankruptcy and protect my home. Please help. I am about to sign on the dotted line out of desperation for a loan that will charge 10points due to poor credit. My sense is instead of pulling more equity...to move toward bankruptcy and save equity for emergency in case of job loss. My current credit card, and tax debt is 60,000(16,000 due to IRS which bankruptcy will not pay for). Not including my home of course.
The Irs is garnishing my money from my x husbands debt... PLEASE HELP … I am 60 years Old, Single, and Scared? IRS question: Married (August 1993) Lived, & Divorced (April 2009) in state of Louisiana; Jointly filed income tax through 2000. Husband lied to me and told me he filed income tax 2001-2005. Found out in 2006 that he lied. I begged him to file 2006-2009. He would not. And would divorce me if did without him. I am a teacher in Louisiana . HE is self employed with a cabinet shop in Louisiana. IRS slapped a IRS lien of $200,000+ on our property Jan 2009 and garnished my payroll check in May 2009 ((The property settlement in the divorce gives him the 6,000 square foot shop with machinery & tools and ½ acre and states that he accepts all responsibility for the IRS lien; and I have the 19 acres and a 32 x 90 mobile home.)) I went to a CPA and had the 2001-2008 tax returns handled. IRS looked at them and said ’great’, but the garnishment will stay on until he files AND pays his back taxes. IRS told me that since we were married during the years 2001-2008 that they would continue to garnish my check even though or IF I filed my taxes of 2001-2008. They said since he will not file his taxes that they could and would legally garnish my check or any income forever. My ex-husband told me he has gone to a tax attorney---but, today I found out that he went to Tax Masters (who does not believe in paying taxes). He gets to go on with his life (being the he works for cash) and I get to forever be bound by his tax debt. I have a couple of ideas but I don’t know what to do.: I had my CPA prepare my back taxes for 2001-2008, but IRS said they will still continue to garnish my check. Would it help if I were to get my CPA to file my ex-husband’s taxes? I could use the boxes of papers that I took out of his shop last month. Since I am concerned that they will take my mobile home (even though it has no kitchen cabinets or sink, no doors & molding, etc. in it---yeah, I was married to a cabinet maker!) ---Should I have it moved elsewhere? Go to Attorney General’s office in Louisiana and solicit his help in this matter. His office called the house in Feb 2009 in reference to my ex-husband taking $22,000 from a client and not building his cabinets or returning his money to him. They have a judgment against him in the amount of $33,000. Go to State Representative in Louisiana & in my area and solicit his help in this matter. PLEASE HELP … I am 60 years Old, Single, and Scared ltkdp@yahoo.com
What good are tax rebates? John McCain, exactly like George Walker Bush, and George H.W. Bush, insists that tax relief is the only way to help Americans afford many of lifes expenses, such as health insurance. If I am right, in order to qualify for tax relief, a citizen MUST first have large amounts of money available, to PAY full price, out of their own pocket, for coverage. AFTER the citizen pays this money out, receipts are, then, attached to tax returns. The government then decides if, and how much, to allow a citizens taxes to be reduced, based upon type of policy, and how much tax is owed. But, how does this help the 150 million sub-poverty level American workers, who have seen wages plummett, from $30.00+ per hour, with industrial employers, such as Caterpillar, down to $5.00 per hour, at businesses such as Walmart, and McDonalds? These "jobs" pay such low, sub-poverty level, wages that citizens have NO tax liability. How can tax relief help those who have no tax debt? How can 150 million citizens be expected to pay out of pocket, for insurance premiums, when these people must rely on government assistance, to meet rent, and utilities, while using food stamps for meals? I wish John McCain would address THIS, in the debates. Dont you????
Need some advice...with this tax delay... it is crazy? I filed my taxes on 2/3. This morning I checked WMR and it gave me the 1201 code. I called the IRS they told me it is from taxes owed in 1997. My ex husband owes 6866.00. I was relieved of this debt in 2000 by a letter received from the Dept of Treasury and have the letter giving me innocent spouse relief. The rep told me eventually I would get some money but didnt know when or how much. I called my ex and he hasnt filed in taxes in 5 years. We divorced in 1999. He proceeds to tell me they put a lien on his house and the lien is in my name too, so I ran my credit report and now have a tax lien on my report. I am so frustrated at this point not at the IRS but at the ex and his irresponsibility. Now you know why were divorced! My question is what do I need to do, to prove that I was relieved of the tax debt and now how do I get my money and this off my credit report? I appreciate any help you can give me.
Can I inherit My Parents Debt? I ask because right now my parents are fighting against my grandfather over who is going to help him pay off his debt. Apparently he accumulated about 250k in tax debt over the past 5-10 years... He's a realestate agent and one year made close to 2 million dollars, and spent it all that same year. My grandmother used her own money for herself, he spent his money on his own things, and gifts for him and his mistress. So my mom and her siblings feel they should get thier mothers things, and my grandfather thinks that if they get her things, then they should pay half HIS debt. But they didn't get anything, he sold it all, moved in with his mistress, and my grandmother left him penniless... so he got what he deserved (he was taken off her insurance a couple years before she passed). Well anyway. My parents are about 40k in debt PLUS thier house mortgage, car payments, all that jazz. ANd i fear that instead of putting all the insurance money into these debts, my parents just went on a spending spree :( They are extremely irresponsible people... they drink as if they are 21 (they are close to 60 D:) and both chain smoke. They drive home drunk or under the influence... and party at least once a week. I fear they wont see thier grandchildren in the future :( But because of this irresponsible nature, i'm seriously worried that when they pass, sense i'm the oldest child (and the unfavourite).. that I will inherit all thier debt ( or even have to split it with my brother). Is it possible? Cause if it's a 100% garauntee...then my husband is telling me to disown them for legal reasons. Still treat them as family, see them, yadda yadda, but disown them :x
Tax issues with not having filed (in 06), divorce, etc..Will they hold refunds? It's pretty complex - my ex-wife and I didn't file in 05/06, we owed them - in the last few days, I've remedied that, forms are in the mail to the IRS. I'm the "primary" name on the tax forms. When she files for 07, will they hold HER money towards the money that "we" owe, or are they going to take it up exclusively with me since I was the "primary" name on the filing? I'm taking care of payments etc. for 05/06, I'd rather they not take it up with her (she didn't have an income when we were married, but filing jointly obviously help me cut down what I had to pay, especially accounting for late fees and interest. We're now filing separately, she has a refund on the way - the real question I'm asking is: Are they going to hold that towards our tax debt for 05/06, or give it back to her? We're still friends- b/c we'd been married during those years, we filed as jointly - I did the paperwork and she signed before I mailed 'em in.
UK> My lender is taking a £3500 debt to court! Help? A while back I lost my job and things been really bad since. I am working again and trying to catch up. My coucil tax piled up and my council took me to court, so I get £120 taken straight from my wages before they reach me. This meant I could not pay my loan. There are only 2 or 3 payments left of this coucil tax debt but now a lender is also taking me to court. The debt is 3500 pounds and I'm affraid the court will just add a further 400 or 500 quid to my already small wages. Will the courts wait for the 1st to go before placing the 2nd one in or will they just stack it on?? I'm afraid I won't have money to eat :'(
Is there a legal way to remove a tax lien against a home? My business partner and I purchased an investment home about 2 years ago. We've decided to sell now but there's a big problem: To my surprise and disgust - The IRS has slapped a tax lien against the home since my business partner has to pay back-taxes. We are both on title but I'm solely on the mortgage loan (I messed up in this case, which I know, but I need to deal with removing this tax lien first). She has bad credit so she can't get a loan or even a credit card to pay off her tax debt. I know the housing market is bad but I want to remove this tax lien. Help... S.O.S.... How do I get out of this predicament?
How can I get my money back after being ripped off by the tax resolution scam "Effectur"? I hired the tax resolution company Effectur to handle tax debt with IRS. They stalled until my fees were paid in full, and then stopped work and wouldn't return calls or emails. I hired Effectur to handle my tax debt with IRS. They stalled until my fees were paid in full, and then stopped work and wouldn't return calls or emails. Additionally, in April, 2009, Effectur failed to relay to me a urgent request from the IRS Revenue Office handling my case that he needed certain documents by April 15. As a result, the IRS filed liens against my company, and it resulted in my appearing to be non-cooperative with the IRS and the Revenue Officer, even though I have been seeking in good faith to resolve the matter with the IRS. Currently, Effectur has taken no action with regard to my case for nearly two months while the IRS has pressed for a response and has filed additional liens against my company. I have asked Effectur, to no avail, for nearly two months to: 1) to follow-up with the IRS on my behalf; 2) to provide me with copies of any recent correspondence involving the IRS, if any; and 3) to provide me with a list of all contacts on my behalf between Effectur and the IRS or IRS Revenue Agent, including the name of the Effectur staff member who interacted with the IRS and what the outcome of the call or correspondence was. I have discussed the case and this matter with Effectur Case Manager Walter Wallace and CFO Jack Rayfield, to no avail. After months of Effectur's stalling, it has become clear that this is a complete rip-off, and consistent with the dozens of similar stories I have read about on such internet boards as ComsumerComplaints.com, Ripoffreport.com, among others. Therefore, I am asking for my fees back, so I can engage an attorney or company who will represent me with the IRS. (According to CEO Kenneth Johnson, as stated on Effectur's own site: 'Effectur guarantees results for each client. We strive to be very ethical and do things right from the first phone call. We'll give you honest advice and a straight answer right up front,' adds Johnson." See: http://www.effectur.com/inthenews.aspx?id=53 ) It is particularly troubling that Effectur requested and received power of attorney and is acting as my fiduciary here with the IRS. This is clearly not a reputable company, and should have regulatory action taken against it for the good of people who find themselves in need of help dealing with the IRS. They are a disgrace. Any suggestions about what I can do?

Fee HELP loan and tax return? I started studying in February 2009 and will have earned over the threshold in the 2008-2009 financial year, so will need to pay a compulsary amount back. I have had tax deductions from my pay ever since I first got this loan, and these deductions have been calculated at much more than the correct percentage for my salary when calculated for the period between Feb 09 and 1st July 09. Am I going to recieve any of this over-deducted money back, or do I have to pay it because of my total salary amount, even though I was not studying for the first 6 months of the financial year? If I do, I will end up with a tax debt. Is this how it's calculated, or do you just start paying the debt back from the date you first received the loan? I'm thinking that even though I have studied only for 6 months, I will have to pay back the debt based on my entire year's wages.
Would a change to the US tax code help pay down the national debt? Numerous economists have stated that one of the only ways to pay off the national debt is a more steeply progressive income tax, including higher rates for people making millions. I know spending has to stop first, but how are we supposed to generate revenue when we stop spending and are ready to pay down the debt? Have a bake sale?
Can I get a my money back from a child support debt taken from my tax return, if I never got the notices? I got my tax return back. Child support took $2400, saying that I owe back taxes! I don't understand because child support stop taking the payments out of my checks. I was never unemployed enough time to owe child support that much of a debt! I never got any notices of any garnishments from my tax return. If I had known that I owed them I would have paid my debt before tax season! I don't think that its fair that I'm being penalized for something that I was unaware of!! PAYING CHILD SUPPORT IS NOT THE ISSUE!! I'm the one that asked why child support stop taking payments out of my checks!! I WANT TO TAKE CARE OF MY CHILD!! I just don't understand how I waited all year long, worked like a dog, paid taxes, paid bills, etc. to have my income tax garnished at the beginning of the year!!! What can I do to get at least some of my money back! I will pay them the debt in payments like I was paying before! I have major plans to go in service but this is a major set back!! WHAT CAN I DO!! HELP ME?
Should my wife fear tax collections and bad credit because of my tax debt when I was single? I aquired a tax debt while single and am in collections currently (An installment agreement). I got married 3 years ago to a woman who has been a full time grad student from the beginning and has not earned enough to have to file taxes in those 3 years. She has insisted that we file married but seperately because she is afraid of collection actions against her because of my tax debt but because of this we are losing the tax benefit of filing jointly thus gaining more credit each year toward my debt (I've been filing 0 dependents and having the max tax taken out of my paycheck to get the highest returns which the IRS applies to my debt). We may have an opportunity to submit an offer in compromise soon and put this behind us. Should she fear bad credit, a collection action against her, etc if we change our status this year and possibly amend the previous years we been married to exellerate the reduction of the debt before and until we apply for the OIC?
Can I be held personally responsible for my business' tax debt? The case is a NV LLC that was doing business in CA. It is a one-member-LLC. Dissolved in both states at the end of 2007. Member's profits were reported on Schedule C as part of individual 1040 tax return. The CA Franchise Tax Board is claiming a debt and saying that a tax lien could be filed. The LLC doesn't exist anymore, but what about that member? Could the state go against him?
Profit from sale of home go to federal tax debt? If I were to sell my home and have a profit from it, can the government seize the profit or part of it to go towards a federal tax debt or a student loan debt etc There is no levy or liens against me, this is a 40 year old student loan debt where all tax refunds go to the outstanding debt. The debt is very small, the interest charged is 3 X the original loan amount. All tax refunds go towards the debt. Only the interest is being reduced not the principal. So all of the tax refunds go towards the principal.
How does my husband's tax debt effect me? Should we file separately? My husband accumulated abck tax debt several years before we were married (8 or 9 actually) We married last year in March. We are concerned about attachment of bank accounts (both or our names are on them), attachment of the property (only in my name since 2000). Statute of limitations of CO tax debt: what is it and should I waive it? I'm trying to set up a payment plan for my 2003 CO state taxes, and in order to set the payment plan up, I have to sign a paper that says: "I agree to the terms of this AGREEMENT TO PAY and by doing so, I waive the statute of limitations for the collection of this debt." What does that mean? What is the statute of limitations? It doesn't sound like I should sign. Please give me info!
How can I get out of my tax debt? I owe $80k+ in taxes and simply cannot afford to pay the IRS anything. I make very little at the moment and I owe the taxes on money I have never seen. I worked for a company who had Me put things in my name for awhile. They had me take out large sums of money for them as cash. I now know they used me as a shell company but the paper trail marks me as the debt holder. I was paid a very small sum of money to do this on top of my wages for the company. Being new to business and having no knowledge I thought it was a great deal. Now I am just screwed. Any suggestions? If I decided to just do the time how would I go about doing that and how long would I have to serve?
Getting out of all or partial tax debt from 2006? My husband filed our taxes online last year, and forgot my w-2. The IRS just sent me a notice saying I owe around 2500. I would be getting a refund of 5200. Can I get out of part -or all!-of this debt? I believe it was an error on his part, him having never filed taxes before (I usually do it, but was dealing with a brand new baby, colic, and post-partum depression)....
Will getting married affect a tax debt from a small buisness? I have a question. My mother in law used to have a small buisness, in which she incurred a rather large tax debt owed. She is currently with a gentleman, who has asked her to marry him, but she is afraid to say yes, because she does not want him to be liable for the debt owed. I would assume that all he would have to do is file the Innocent Spouse form, but I am not sure. Would her getting married to him make him liable for the tax debt, or because the debt was incurred before she was married, or even met him, he would not have any responsibility for it. If they do get married, how would he go about filing his taxes so they wouldn't take his money for the debt by accident. thank you.
is attorneys fees considered a non tax federal debt? i have a outstanding attorney bill that i have not paid off yet and it says for the stimulus rebate that if you have any out standing non tax federal debts they will use that money to pay on that. How can i settle my tax debt with the IRS? I owe the IRS 5K+ in tax. I can't pay the amount in full and If I make payments it will take me forever to pay it off because of interests every month. What can I do to settle with the IRS? any optios, advice? Side Note: What happens if you don't pay the IRS? Good answers. This just happened this year. How long it takes the IRS to lien the bank accout or garnish wages?
How forgiving is the IRS about tax debt? I've heard a lot of stories about how the IRS can come after people. IF you owe, say, $20,000 but are technically insolvent right now, will they attempt to garnish your wages? Will they work with you? If you were to inherit a house a few years from now, would they try to take your house from you? Or is that under rare circumstances?

Will my spouse and child be liable for my NYS sales tax debt? I am on wage garnishment (10%) of gross pay due to a partners' embezzelment of NYS sales tax. I lost my job, missed payments, and they seized what was left of my bank account. Now married and expecting, will NYS seize my family's accounts? Does it matter how one files their taxes? I don't know where to go.
can tax debt be pass on after probate? My mother passed away july 2007. I went thru probate, filed taxes for 2007 and everything was finished, I thought. I got a letter from the IRS stating that her 2006 taxes were incorrect. Can they collect the $9000 they say she owes?
How should I pay down my debt using my tax refund? I received my tax refund of approx 2K. I have a credit card debt of 3K and an computer i financed whose total debt is 1500. How should I split my check among my two debts? I heard paying off a credit card too fast was bad. (The credit card and the computer are at the exact same interest rate.) I will save my suggestions because I hope to here from a seasoned player of the credit game. Thank in advance.
Potential large tax debt on S-Corporation Foreclosure? I owned a business that unfotunately went into foreclosure. The bank has done an auction on the equipment and property and there is still a debt left over on the loan which I personally guarenteed of $350,000+. My accountant is telling me that I may potentialy have to pay a substantial amount in taxes because there is a potentialy large gain from the repossession of the assets because it was part of the cancelation of the debt, yet the debt wasn't canceled becuase I still owe the debt left on the loan that the proceeds didn't cover. I was an S corporation. Does this seem right to you and/or do you see another alternative to me not having to pay taxes if there is still a large debt left for me to pay?
does beneficiary need to pay tax debt of decedent in life insurance premium? what I meant was income tax. Because I read this in a forum: In a recent court case, the IRS was allowed to collect life insurance proceeds to pay the income tax debts of the decedent because the decedent had signed a collateral assignment of the policy in favor of the IRS. Thanks for answering my question.
Is personal bad debt deductible on my tax return? A friend of mine wanted to borrow a large sum of money for emergency. Although it was sort of strange to ask, I told him yes, but he had to sign a promissory note (drawn up by WillMaker or some other software). Now many months passed but I never seen a dime of it. Can I write this loan as bad debt on my tax return?
Is there a lawyer or agency that can help me fix my finance, debt, and tax nightmare? HELP! Fifteen years of alcoholism and neglect has left my finances in complete disarray. I want to get married and be normal now, and as of now, I'm sober and have been in a great job for two years, but I have unconsolidated student loans in arrears, 401ks floating around I've forgotten about, unpaid and unfiled taxes, defaulted debts galore, and just a massive confusing mess to untangle. If it's not obvious, I am clueless about finances. Is there a service or firm I can call that can figure all this out for me, find out what I have and what I owe, consolidate everything, and get me on track to being a normal financial citizen for the first time in my life? I need to hand the authority off to someone who can make all the enquiries, write the letters, place the calls, negotiate with my creditors, etc. for me and whom I could simply pay a fee to for the service. Thank you for the response. I was hoping for a specific answer though. I've called all over to the credit counseling services, but none of them will do the research for me, which is what I need.
What is the tax rate on thecancellation of debt? If my debt was $3000 and my creditor forgave $2000. What would be the approx rate or amount that we need to prepare to pay to the IRS? Is there a tax table available online for this? Or a general rate?
