I have no present debt. I have old issues on my credit report. How do I eliminate that debt?

- Your credit rating lasts for 6 years in the UK so whatever you were doing 72 months ago drops off this month. If there are errors on your file you can get them corrected or have a note appended to them.
- A credit history is just that--history. You cannot change it. In the USA, it may be 7 years before an item agest off of the credit history.
- Start writing letters. I am in a similar situation that you're in I think. When I was younger, I had a credit limit on an old bank account and went over it and never paid the money. The bank defaulted the account and wrote it off as a charge off which is very bad. Since then, i've had nothing on my record and I have one credit card that i've been in good standing with for almost a year now. My credit score is o.k. but that charge off is a huge black eye so I wrote to the bank colletions department (they haven't sold it to a colletions agency yet) and I told them that I am prepared to pay the debt in full including all interest fees. They wrote me back and said that was fine and it was now in black and white. I went a step further and asked to have the charge off completed removed from my credit report. This was on the advise of a financial advisor. He told me having your charge off changed to "charge off - paid/settled" is better than the charge off but still bad. Surprisingly, they agreed! They figured they rather get their money than me possibly not pay them
